Poetry Slam

This past Friday, students on Team Couloir shared some of the poetry they created during the poetry unit. Thank you to the families who were able to come and support and for all the yummy food contributions.

Dr. Les Kanat

Dr. Les Kanat, otherwise own as Marin's dad, is a professor of geology at Johnson State College. He came to visit us today and spoke about groundwater, porosity, and permeability. He also spoke about the possibility of contaminants in the water and the importance of clean drinking water. Thank you Les for coming in.

Guest Speaker

Aidan's mom, Cathy McNamara came in today to share with student's about her job working for Enpro Services/NRC(National Response Corporation). Cathy brought in a 'boom' and had her daughter dress in a HAZMAT suit. It was a great opportunity for students to connect their 'design process' to the real-world. Thank you Cathy!

The Engineering Design Process

Prior to vacation, students worked to design a process to clean-up an oil spill. The design process includes students working in a small group to ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve a solution. We also had Miles Waite(Mrs. Waite's brother-in-law)in as a guest speaker. Miles runs Waite Environmental.

Pi Day

Thank you for all of the contributions to Pi Day! We had a wonderful celebration.

We had a great day today! We began with skating at Cairn's Arena. While there, students performed the skits they had planned, demonstrating Newton's Three Laws. We then went to Fleming Museum and learned about the Native American Exhibit and worked on a small art project, Thank you to the many chaperon's who were very supportive(literally); Rebecca Flewelling, Kelley Newell-Rentz, Nikki Yandow, Allison Surks, Carol Sullivan Scott Brown, Tim Brisbin, Lisa Magnuson, Elisa Polli, Jena Medina, Jessica Adams and Robyn Mundell.

Calculating Speed(and Sledding!)

Last week the new snow brought us a great opportunity to take our science learning outside. At Mills River we used the student driven question, 'will a sled with more mass go faster than one with less mass?' to 'drive' our learning. Students will work this week to put the data on Google sheets, create a graph and draw a conclusion based on the evidence they gathered. Fun was had by all!
